Hickerel Fhoto Twenty-eight inducted into Honor Society by Tamera Majors New members were inducted into North Carolina’s oldest chapter of the National Honor Society. Grimsley’s Torchlight Chapter was the first honor society in the state and 73rd in the nation. Presently there are 20,400 chapters across the country. Students are inducted into the organization during the spring of their junior year or during the fall or spring of their senior year. Criteria for induction includes a total grade point average of 3.00 or better, participation in extra curricular activities, and leadership in the classroom, as well as in socie ty. The minimum grade point average for eligibility was lowered this year from a 3.4 to a 3.0 Grimsley grade point requirements were lowered in order to make all four city high schools have a uniform standard. The process of selecting new members begins with a computer made list of all students who meet the grade-point average re quirements. This list in turn is given to each member of the GHS faculty. Faculty members are ask ed to make comments about the students whom they know. These comments go to a faculty commit tee made up of 12 members. This committee meets to discuss this preliminary list of possible members. During the committee’s deliberations, the faculty members decide on the students who best meet the criteria of National Honor Society. Because there is no limit on the number of Torchlight members, the committee is free to admit as many students as they believe are qualified. The members inducted ii November ceremonies are Christopher Apple, JoBeth Baker Lamar Bradley, Alicia Burgman Schuyler Culver, Pamela Dingle Cynthia Essa, Holmes Foreman, Lisa Frazier, Elizabeth Freeze, William Gerschwind, Harry Hassell, Robert Huss, Frank Kauder, Martha Lannon, Steve Long, Anita McCoy, Kay Miller, Geoffrey Neal, Loc Nguyen,, Patrick Parr, Will Plyler, Gina Russo, Jodi Slotchiver, Tyacy Taft, James Tedder Michele Tirella, and Timothy Wood Shortly after Christmas on December 28th the boys varsity basketball team will attempt to regain the little four title, which it lost one year ago to Danny Mann ing and the Pirates. If GHS comes away with the championship, it will be their fourth and will break the tie with Page, who, like Grimsley, has three championships now. The Holiday Classic begins December 28th in the Greensboro Coliseum. Joining the four city teams in the seven year old tournament will be Southeast, Northwest, Northeast, and Western Guilford who expects to have one of the areas best teams. The Little Four Tournament is sponsored by the Greensboro Sports Council who raised between 130,000 and 140,000 dollars last Club sponsors holiday dance by Pamela Ramsbotham The “Bee Boppin’ Bell Rockin’ Holiday Dance” was a charity dance, given by the Civinettes Ser vice Club, with the proceeds going to Mclver School. Grimsley’s third annual Holiday Dance was held Saturday, December 17 in the Aux iliary gym. The disc jockey for this dance was Alexander Andrews. His ser vices were donated for the holiday dance. Michelle Martorano, president of the Civenettes, said “We hope to surpass our last year’s donation of $400. If enough people come, we will, since we have the decoration material, food, tickets, etc. donated.” All work for the dance, including decorations, publicity, tickets, and refreshments was done by the Civinettes. They felt that this was “probably the most fun-filled dance because it is just for the purpose of celebrating the holidays.” year from the event. This money, which is raised through sales and advertisements, is put into a public school’s fund. Fred Joseph, secretary of Greensboro Sports Council said, “The city of Greensboro is behind high school sports.” Jospeh continued; “If we get the students behind the teams, maybe the parents will join the ral ly to the occasion.” After opening the season with a strong win over Independence, and suffering a disappointing loss to Chapel Hill in the same week the Whirlies will need to be stronger defensively and rely on the outside shot to win the tournament. Accor ding to senior guard, Allen Leonard, “We are looking forward to it because we have done well there in the past and hope to con tinue the tradition.” Coach Phil Weaver beheves that the little four is a great experience for all teams. The Whirlies have made the finals every time since the tournament has been in existence, and this year should prove to be another success. The opening round is set to begin at 5:15 on December 28 with Grimsley facing Western Guilford. Second round for the Whirlies should be on December 29 at 8:30, and the finals on the following evening at 8:30. Accompanying the boys tourna ment will be the girls Little Four Invitational tournament which began December 20th and runs through December 21. Apples take “Byte”atGHS by Kevin Moran and Alise Weinstein Shirey conducted choral concert by Marsha Sink Dr. Ronald Shirey of Texas Christian University conducted the Grimsley chorus and orchestra in a performance of “Song of Democracy.” The concert, held November 17 in the school auditorium, was a high point of American Education Week festivities. Dr. Shirey was in the area to con duct the N.C. honors chorus con cert held in Winston-Salem November 18 and 19. In addition to being director of choral studies at Texas Christian, Shirey also con ducts the Dallas Symphony chorus and serves as choirmaster of University Christian Church in Fort Worth. “This music is a chance to see, feel, and sense the full orchestra feeling,” said Shirey of this selec tion presented which is a Walt Whitman poem set to music. Grimsley’s choral director Marta Force had selected the song because according to Force it “was perfect for the American Education Week Prior to the musical performanci. Dr. Baur gave a short welcome and introduced Mr. Dale Metz, principal of Gateway Education Center. Dr. Bonny Baur, Mrs. Rosa Bowden, Mr. Joe Franks, Ms. Mar ta Force, Colonel Lazelle Free, Mrs. Mary Sigmon and Mr. James R. Wade were guest members of the chorus. Two, of hopefully eight new Ap ple II E Computers, were installed at Grimsley on December 5. There is currently one computer here that is being used for business classes. These new computers which will be located in the computer lab in the main building, are brand new and cost the school system $2000 each. According to Mr. Crowell the business department jvill be given top priority for using the two hew computers. They will be used for ac counting and in the Introduction to Computers course. “Ideally we need one computer in the library, one for physics and chemistry department, and about eight in the computer lab,” said Mr. Crowell in a recent interview. Crowell also stated that six more computers have been ordered and should arrive in about six weeks. Two of the computers on order I will be available soon in the media center. Students with computer ex perience will be allowed to use these computers pending prior to faculty approval. A future goal at Grimsley is “to put out a lot of students that are c^puter literate,” says Crowell. With a total of nine computers on campus, the goal may soon be achieved. Leonard advances Allen Leonard is the only one of three Morehead Scholar nominees from Grimsley to, advance to district competitihfi. Leonard has an interview fn December which win determine whether or not he goes to the finals in February. The finals will be held in Chapel Hill.
